Public Health Preparedness Delegation to Brazil

Andrea P. Lowe, President/CEO of A & E Enterprise and doctoral candidate, was recently interviewed and accepted by the People to People Student Ambassador Program to participate in a public health preparedness delegation to Brazil from December 3-11, 2011.

In case you have not heard of People-to-People, former President Dwight D. Eisenhower founded the organization in 1956 to share and learn from experiences in different cultures. As one of a select group of public health delegates invited to Brazil, Andrea will gain a wealth of firsthand information that I can use to better prepare individuals, businesses, and organizations in the United States. The 8-day experience includes meetings with government officials, educational activities, site visits, and other cultural exploitations in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil recently established an emergency management system to strengthen its disaster management throughout the country. By examining an emerging system of preparedness, this will allow Andrea and the other delegates to draw on new technologies and lessons learned from Brazil to advance preparedness systems in the U.S. Public health preparedness touches the lives of everyone. Public health is in the news every day, and it is what you read in the daily newspaper. Public health is the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink. It is an E. coli catastrophe, oil spill, swine flu, bioterrorism, September 11, Hurricane Katrina, obesity, crime, and the list goes on.

Andrea is personally looking forward to broadening her perspectives of the world and gaining a better understanding of Brazil’s response to public health and health care issues. Andrea will share her experience through presentations at schools, civic and social clubs, organizations, small businesses, and government/non-government agencies in the community.
