How to Promote Your Small Tour Business in a Down Economy

How do you keep your small travel business going if not growing in a down economy? Even in a down economy, people are traveling. Some of those people are your friends.

Your friends may not know about your business or they may be undecided about where to take their next vacation. Throw a travel party! Or host a theme party, for instance, in a Mexican restaurant if you book cruises to Mexico. Invite all your friends & encourage them to bring a guest. Make it fun with food, music and small prizes. Keep your sales pitch on the down low. Everyone should go home with your contact info, website address and a head full of ideas.

Join online “meet-up” groups in your area to make new friends. As your circle of friends grows, so will your referrals. Meet-up groups have common interests and you can target photography or travel clubs. Remember the goal is to make friends, not pitch your product. Meet-ups offer sponsor opportunities for $5 per club and is an inexpensive way to get your brand in front of a group of potential customers.

To promote your established business – remember that word-of-mouth recommendations cost you nothing and are perhaps the most valuable marketing asset you have. Take care of your current customers by sending hand-written thank you cards after they have used your service and followup with a holiday greeting to keep your name in the top of their minds.

Finally, if you collaborate with service providers who come in contact with your customers, make sure they are a good reflection of your brand and your business ethics. Customers have expectations and if those expectations are not upheld by your partners, it will also reflect poorly on you.
